OMG! Matt Hughes vs Royce Gracie!!!
Now that is going to be one hell of a good fight!
If only I wasn’t investing so much in cycling right now, I’d be camping out on Ticketmaster to get tickets. Oh well I will just have to settle with watching the PPV live at my local watering hole!

Hughes is a more well rounded fighter, he’s younger, he doesn’t have nearly as much ring rust, and only an idiot would say that strength doesn’t matter. Hughes, pound for pound, is one of the strongest fighters ever.

Your post just proves my point. Gracie was able to beat guys like Shamrock and Severen because he was an unknown quanity at the time. Everybody has him figured out now, hence his long absence from the UFC.
Gracie is one dimentional, he can submit a guy, and thats it. Hughes is much more athletic than Gracie, he’s a better striker (not that that’s saying much), his ground and pound is better, and he is schooled in BJJ.
And to say that “sure, strength matters, but not to Gracie” is to deny the whole fucking point.

gus i really believe you are wrong, just don’t count out royce because that is what is idiotic. being schooled in bjj is different than being a fucking master at it, this fight will go to the ground and matt will not be able to ground and pound bad enough to stop it through royces legendary defense. matt is a wrestler and he is very strong his skills don’t stretch all that much further then that. when royce was in the ufc 10 yrs ago he was a 4th degree black belt he is now a 8th degree black belt, he is so much smarter, Few people make it to that level. matt has lost 4 times, and they are all by a tapout, three were just a 1st degree bjj blackbelt. you obviously don’t know the power of jiu-jitsu, look it up strength has nothing to do with a fight when a bjj master like royce is fighting, it is just a fact not opinion a fact. 1) If I made a web site that said sticking your cock into a vat of ranch dressing would make it grow 4 inches and grow in the dark it still wouldn’t be the case.
2) By your logic Royce could tap out a wrecking ball since he’s immune to the laws of physics.
3) Kimo ground and pounded Royce so bad he couldn’t keep fighting, and Hughes is a much better fighter than Kimo. Royce is better than a decade older.
4) I’ve studied BJJ, I’m nowhere near Royce’s level, but I know that I’ve tapped much higher ranking people just because I was a lot bigger and stronger than them, and I suck at jujitsu.
5) Did you see Hughes fight against St. Pierre? He reversed a full on kimora from a very knowledgable jujitsu player with an arm bar. That’s high fucking level jujitsu my friend.
I am a black belt in jiu-jitsu and i know the shit too. I didn’t say he was immune to the laws of physics, nobdy fucking is, he is great at containg his opponents strength use different limbs on their body such as their arms or legs even wrists. good example of what i am trying to explain to you bob sapp vs. antonio minotauro. Sapp weighed at least 120 pounds more(solid pure muscle) and still fell to bjj. Bob sapp is fucking 5 times stronger than matt. and just because you can reverse one move does not meen you have a high level in jiu-jitsu, i knew ten reversals in two weeks so don’t tell me that shit. St. pierre is a very good fighter by by no meens royce when it comes to jiu-jitsu. and yes hughes is a much better fighter than kimo but kimo was at least twice as stronger than matt and still was tapped out by royce and he weighed 265 pounds. matt said himself he does not want to go to the ground with gracie, he has never fought a jiu-jitsu fighter of this level before and never will again. he has slim to almost no chance on the ground i promise that fuck he basically said it. Before you talk about that g.s.p fight you need to take a look at that bj penn fight and check out what you call good jiu-jitsu game by matt. i’m out dis bitch
I have been whatching the UFC since the very start when the ruling system was so much different. A lot of comments here such as he going to do this and he’s going to do that realy wont define an outcome.
For Royce i think alot of people are saying he is rusty this and that, fact is Royce has been active in other areas of no holds bar competition and has been competing regular. A few changes in the UFC i think will effect Royce and he has commented himself towards the time limits which Royce has used to his benefit having longer rounds to tire and lock down his opponent. Another factor the timelimit two fighters can stay on the ground, is another factor again gracie has mentioned in interviews. Both these changes will effect Royce to achieve his goal and he is aware of that.
As for hughes youth and experience in a more modern UFC fighting enviroment will again work for him as it did with tito and shamrock, being the younger fighter and again his battle plan more suited with the new UFC rules these thing again add up against Royce.
The Gracie system shaped the fighting world by highlighting a fight goes to the ground, and many fighters at that time were vunerable in this area.
Another factor again which has tainted most sports today the use of steroids and other natural vitamins
to aid a fighter.
My conclusion i dont think for any moment that Gracie will overlook any of these points, and again a new game plan will be brought i think on the day
from Gracies’s side, to fit in with the new enviroment. As for hughes i doubt he will be eager to go to the ground with Royce, but will be workin hard rite now to make sure his ground plan is 100%.
I wish them both luck because i feel who ever wins or looses it will be a great fight, and a legend has returned to the octagon……………….

ive trained with royce myself and hes tha most kindest person ive ever met in my life.. its jus crazy how hes so nice outside of a cage or ring.. but when hes in one hes incredible…. i dont see royce being submitted or knocked out.. only way he would loose is if tha damn time limits run out and the judges cheat him out…. but hughes never fought anyone like royce. i think royce will win…. hughes should be happy that hes not fightin rickson or caique

First off, lets take a look at these two fighters records and levels of expierience. Gracie is a practitioner of Gracie Jiu Jitsu and has been training at it for about 30 years. His UFCrecord is 13 wins, 2 losses, and 3 draws. Hughes is a practitioner of wrestling and has been working on that for about 15 years. His UFC record is 38 wins, 4 losses, and 0 draws. Every time Hughes has lost, it has been to fighters of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. These BJJ fighters are much less expierienced than Gracie. Hell, gracie’s art is named after his father Helio Gracie. When Gracie has lost in the past, one was a reason im not sure of to Harold howard in the beginning of the match, and the other to Submission wrestling legend Kazushi “The Gracie Hunter” Sakuraba, who is an excellent fighter. I think the match will go right to the mat and be over in about 4 minutes with gracie submitting Hughes with a rear naked choke, and Gus, you’re gay.

My heart says Gracie but my brains says Hughes. I think it can go either way, it really comes down to who makes the fight mistake. cuz if gracie messes up, he’ll be pounded the hell out of and if hughes messes up he’ll be submitted.

I think Matt Hughes will avoid the mat like the Black Virus. He believes that he is well-rounded and has a good stand-up striking game, but he cannot stop an opponent on his feet. Matt will use his wresting as a defense to takedown instead of offensively as usual. Thus, Matt wants the fight to be decided by the judges based on both men’s weakest aspect.
Royce, on the other hand, wants the fight decided by the fighters on the ground where they are both at their best. Royce will have to get Matt on the ground to win, but that will be difficult for him. My guess is that Royce will try to use striking to set up a takedown.
An interesting fight would be one where Matt slams Royce and tries to GnP Royce into submission while Royce tries to work a choke. However, I don’t think Matt is interested in using his best game and will settle for a decision based on kickboxing between the two best though different ground fighters. Basically, Matt isn’t going to give us what we want to see, and he is willing to play the judges instead of answering the question we want to know: Can Matt GnP Royce into submission without getting caught in a jiu-jitsu submission?

You talk as if Matt Hughes hasn’t fought any fantastic submission fighters (who are far stronger than Royce will ever be). Sure, Royce is arguably the best submission fighter. Still his MMA record is only 13 - 2 - 3, and out his last 5 fights hes only won 2 (A win over Chad “Akebono” Rowan MMA record - 0 wins and 3 losses, and a win over Nobuhiko Takada MMA record - 2 wins and 6 losses. These guys are hardly He-man) THESE LAST 5 FIGHTS HAVE BEEN SPACED OVER 5 YEARS! Has Gracie ever fought anyone of Matt Hughes’ calibur? NO.
Now Matt Hughes on the other hand has an MMA record of 40 - 4 - 0 (impressive?) and out the same past 5 years he has had 29 wins and 3 losses. Thats 32 fights compaired to Gracies 5.
The fact is that while Gracie was the dominant UFC fighter in 1993 and 1994 hes nothing special now. Sure, you all say “But hes fought someone twice the weight of him!” that proves nothing! obviously he should win if hes a GJJ ace and the fat guys a striker with little ground game. Also the person who said “muscle doesn’t count for anything look at Bob Sapp” - Bob Sapps a joke, you cant compair him to Matt Hughes.

It will be a decent fight, but I see Hughes coming out on top. He has been consistently improving all aspects of his game and he just keep getting better. For example, look at the kimura reversal he put on St. Pierre in their fight, and St. Pierre is a great fighter. That’s not saying Hughes’ jiu-jitsu is at the same level as Gracie’s, but he is good enough not to get caught while making a foolish mistake (like he did in the Penn fight).
I think it’s good for Gracie that he has been wokring on his stand-up skills, which were a weakness for him in the past. With UFC being what they are, I just don’t think Gracie can pull it off. I wouldn’t exactly call it an “upset” if Gracie wins, I just think it’s unlikely. Hughes is too well rounded, strong and athletic. If/when he beats Gracie, I’d like to see Hughes take a rematch against Penn to see if that was the fluke everyone says it was.
I guess we’ll see when we see. Hughes-Gracie should be an entertaining fight either way.
Even back when Gracie was the bomb ( 1st few UFC’s ), he still needed the no-time limit rules of UFC to catch the strong guys in a submission….and this was when the world was still in shock of Gracie jujitsu. Now everyone trains in it…true they are not masters but Gracie has let himself come 180 degrees away from his game. When he came on the scene, noone was training jujitsu submissions/defense…now he is the one who isnt training the other aspects enough. Yea, sure he is practicing some kick boxing and striking, but listening to his interviews he still believes GJJ is the one and only way to win. In the first few UFC’s, strikers/brawlers/karate types felt stand up was the ticket…they lost. Now Gracie thinks jujitsu is the only thing he is gonna need. Get ready to see another old schooler bite the dust, al la Ken Shamrock, Kimo, Tank Abbot.
I’m a huge fan of both of these men. Hughes is an animal. Hughes-Trigg 2 is plenty proof of that and like him or not, he is favored. On the other hand, every Royce interview I see for this fight, he gives off the impression that he knows something we don’t. Gracie was doing things in the very beginning that had to bee seen to believe. I honestly have no idea who will win.

You make it sound like he got crushed. He just got overpowered on the ground. If the clinch would have been a bit different, if Gracie could have mounted Hughes then it would have been a whole different story.

The way i see it is that Gracie taking this fight in the first place was a stupid decision which has only rewarded him with a sore face. He should have fought other contenders in the welterweight division and earned a title shot.
IF, if Gracie was a decent fighter he would have beat Hughes, IF.

This isn’t the same Royce Gracie that we saw 10 years ago. Royce was in there because he was getting paid, not because he wanted to win. 10 years ago Royce had fire in his eyes, he froze his opponents with his stare and had something to prove when he went into the ring. This time he was out of shape physically, and wasn’t ready mentally. You could see in his eyes that he didn’t care. For his part he pulled Matt Hughes into his game plan with his pesky kicks and slaps. Matt couldn’t hit him and had no choice but to get into the grappling range. From there I think Royce stymied Hughes on the ground to the point where Matt had no other choice but to start punching. He couldn’t submit Royce, even in the armbar the look on Royce’s face was pure relaxation. If Royce had trained properly for the fight he would have taken Hughes’ back from when he got out of the cross-mount and submitted him but he wasn’t ready and wound up getting punched. One last thing, Matt wasn’t hitting him squarely and had this fight not had time limits I think it may have been different too.
